Vacation notes

I’ve been absent from the site for the past 10 days (my posts were previously written thanks to WordPress scheduling software). Its been cool and somewhat rainy here in New England. So that has meant a rather quiet vacation. Not bad for me but probably boring the kids.

We had a big scare a couple of days ago when Sam (my 10 year old) did a flip off of a swing and didn’t stick the landing as he usually does. Hit the back of his head very hard and knocked himself silly. He got up stagger and hit the deck on his face, I suspect he blacked out for about 2 seconds. He was scared, we were scared. But after a bit of Tylenol he was fine. Hopefully, he learned that gymnastics should be done where there are mats!

Last night we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with the Papanicolaous here in MA. These are good friend who have 3 adopted children. We bonded with them many years ago over infertility/adoption.

Looking forward to being back in my own bed but have another family stop to make.

Thanks for the many comments on the posts. Sorry I haven’t had time to reply. Enjoy the last 2 weeks of summer!

Happy Anniversary Kim

18 years of wedded bliss. Well, for me anyway…for you, you’ve had to be quite longsuffering! Here’s the top three things I love about you:

3. You love to talk about whatever, but especially good books and whatever passage you are studying at the time. There’s never a shortage of things to talk about.
2. You have a short memory for wrongs and a long memory for our (me and the boys) potential good. You are quick to forgive.
1. You are committed to righteousness in yourself and us. It is a mark of your beauty!

What’s growing in my yard

Dahlias are pretty but even better is something you can eat. They’re like candy! Can’t wait for my big ones to ripen. Next week should be the first.

Crowned!!

I’m getting a golden crown. Just got fitted for it yesterday….at the dentist. I broke a tooth last weekend and finally got in to get a temporary. And the crown will only be gold alloy underneath. No jewels on top though I’m paying for it like there will be!

Another training opportunity…

I’m probably doing too many ads here but as I’m off today for conference with Paul Wachtel (see my “on my nightstand” for a link for his book), I thought I would tell you all about a conference this fall by CCEF. This year they are teaching on addictions. I, along with Diane Langberg, Leslie Vernick, John Freeman, and the usual crew of CCEF faculty, are going to be doing a number of great teachings on the problem of addictions. My talk will be for counselors trying to work with addicts. Check out www.ccef.org for more details.

The death of an old but lost friend

Last night I was cleaning out my nightstand and saw an email from an old friend which had his current address on it and a sarcastic note telling me that it was the second time he was sending me his snail-mail address and that I ought to put it somewhere safe. It made me laugh–and then want to connect with him again. So, I did what most of us might do, I googled him and found, sadly, that he had died 1 year ago!

You might be able to tell we weren’t that close of late. In fact, we were close only for a short time. I met him in college and we became instant friends. He had an intensity and sarcastic humor that I loved and dreaded. Time with him was never dull. He taught me about great food and about the downtrodden. I think when I met him he was fighting for the imprisoned pastors in Russia.

Actually, I had met him in the sandbox as a kid in Nova Scotia (those of you reading this blog for a while may remember the previous banner pic of an oceanview, practically taken from the sandbox). So, we hit it off well as college students–until I offended him 2 years later. I think he didn’t speak to me for at least a year (I kicked him out of my room at 2 am when he wanted to tell me all about a breakup). A year later we were both in Israel for school and so we tried, mildly successfully to rekindle our friendship. Another year later we were both in Philadelphia and had a few good times. He introduced me to my lovely wife.

But then our relationship soured as he became increasingly angry. He left the area, even the country and we had little contact. He was involved in underground work to elevate the plight of Palestinians to the American people. He came out of the closet. When he found out I married Kim without inviting him, he never really forgave me. I should have but I assumed we were on the outs and he wasn’t even in the country.

We tried to find a way to relate despite his complete rejection of Christianity and even antagonistic attack of everything he once stood for. I think we did alright at first but then it faded away.

This man was the brightest, most eloquent, critical thinker I’ve ever known. His bitterness had an impact during the time I knew him but I’m hoping he overcame that. But, I’m saddened at the loss of his fight for the downtrodden and his persistent belief that true Christianity was to be rejected as always and only fake. I think he was able to separate bad examples of Christianity from Christianity itself but I”m not sure.

I wish I could have just one more conversation and to enjoy a good laugh with him.

Digital vs. analog TV

Probably most of you watch your television via cable or dish. We still get our analog over the airways. I just bought our little box to translate current analog to digital and lo and behold I get new channels (but lose PBS if I use the box. And here’s my conundrum. I can either watch a crystal clear ABC tonight and see the Celtics game is what seems like HD. Or, I can watch a snowy analog. Seems like a no-brainer right? Nope. Snowy analog wins because my crystal clear digital station has problems. It runs smoothly and then freezes or creates a Picasso-like cubist picture and the sound disappears til it starts again.

I’ve tried to mess with my rabbit ears to see if that helps but to no avail yet. Any help?

Women in the Word Conference in October

For the last couple of years a group of women have been running a conference for women to increase their ability to teach the Bible well. If you aspire to be a better bible teacher, you might want to check out this conference. If you go, you’ll have practice (and constructive criticism) giving very brief bible studies. Definitely well worth your time. Click the following for a link to a PDF brochure: wiw20fall20brochure

My lovely wife is one of the group leaders and has nothing but great things to say about this uber-talented group. Wish I could go but alas I’m not the right gender.

Off to Dallas

Will be MIA the next few days as I’m off to Dallas, TX to Park Cities Presbyterian Church, to present to counselors on the best practices (that I know of) for working with churches facing the problem of abuse.
