Abuse of power in the church: What is it? What can we do?

On Saturday I participated in a 40 minute webinar hosted by GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment) along with Dr. Diane Langberg. If you want to watch it on YouTube, here is the link. We defined various forms of power and how it can be abused. We talked about how organizations and systems may end up supporting abuse of power. And we considered some ways in which we can respond to victims. Throughout the year, GRACE will host more of these webinars and delve deeper into the impact of abuse and ways to heal.

Abuse of power is very evident in some churches. I call it “Controlled Religion”. The culture is one of a Monarchy. A church ran by 1 Senior Pastor or in the smaller churches, a family or families who think they own the church and who control the Pastor by a string to perform. Victims if this need to be strong in their faith, deep in their knowledge of the word of God and understand their covenant relationship with Christ. This is the only way to break loose of Controlled Religion and the people who enforce it. The Holy Spirit once asked me a question during a despairing time in the church. He asked me “By whose standard are you a Christian? By theirs or by mine?” Something to think about.
