What’s on your summer reading list?

Now that my semester is over I’m looking to knock off some books off my fun reading list (which always grows faster than I can read). Do you have a list and what are the books you would like to read (or, are likely to read) before the summer is over? Trying to decide what to take on vacation in August. Usually I know right away. But right now, I’m conflicted. What if my first choice (#5) doesn’t come in?

Here’s my fun list:

1. Christian Counseling: An introduction(Maloney and Augsburger). Done
2. The Perfect Storm(Junger). Old, I know but fascinating. Done.
3. Inside Hamas: The untold story of the militant islamic movement(Chehab). BTW, very intersting as it shows how Israel encouraged the formation of Hamas in the mid 80s (when I was there as a student) thinking that Hamas would keep the PLO in check. Just goes to show that when you introduce snakes to deal with the rabbits, the snakes have ways of raising havoc you never imagined.
4. Infidel (Ali). Done
5. New England White (Carter). On waitlist at the library
6. The children of Hurin (Tolkien). Same as #5
7. Johnny Tremain (reading to the kids). In progress.
8. The family sabbatical handbook (Bernick). In progress. This is my fantasy–live abroad for a year. It brings back the several trips I made as a young adult.

FUN summer reading? Oh, you must mean not-required-for-seminary reading. OK, here goes the list so far:

    1) Emma (Austen)– I “read” this via CD in the car back and forth to practicum. I love Jane Austen’s work.

    2) Hope-focused marriage counseling (Worthington)– not sure how much ‘fun’ this one is, but I’m reading it as follow-up to a study on solution-focused brief therapy.

    3) Blue like jazz (Miller)– My teen daughter recommended it, so I think it will generate some conversation for us.

    4) if I have time, something completely frivolous like learning Irish

  2. I’m sure Hope-Focused is a good book but…fun summer reading? I enjoyed Miller’s book. He makes you think!

Well, I’m really enjoying the Miller book (I love his story of the confessional on the Reed campus). And I’m listening to Amazing Grace by Eric Metaxas, which is very well written (or should I say, spoken). Funny, but I do not recall learning any of that history when I was in school. The descriptions of the conditions of the slave ships are horrifyingly vivid. It causes me to ponder the modern-day equivalents that I usually am too busy at Starbucks to consider…

That is likely all the ‘fun’ reading I will get in this summer!

  4. Barb, thanks for the update on your readings. Blue like Jazz is a great read. He tells a good story and makes you think.

  5. You have a number of good reads listed! If I may, I’d like to recommend a book that is coming out this August called The Gargoyle. You won’t be disappointed. It’s going to be a huge success.
