Why racial reconciliation?

I’ve posted here a couple of times on the necessity of racial reconciliation. One of the most biblical arguments I’ve heard is by Rev. Brenda Salter McNeil. You can read a summary I made of her John 4 sermon here or go to her website and watch a clip of the DVD. However, Ed Gilbreath has taken her question, “Why is it nice to have racial diversity in the church?”  and posted on his blog. I encourage you to check it out, especially the comments to his post. That is where several people make an attempt to answer the question as to why it is so important to have racial diversity in the church.

My short answer? Because I do not possess the fullness of the Gospel message in my own reading of Scripture and how it addresses life. When I am in racially diverse communities (and that means not just in the congregants but in the leadership, music, focus, etc.) then I am able to see just how rich the story of reconciliation, redemption, glory-weights, grace, and the Gospel are in the life of God’s people. Things I didn’t see are clearer; questions I never asked are present. And I am more amazed at the power and genius of our Creator.

  1. Love your answer brother! Hits on racial reconciliation pointing to the “multi-colored, diverse wisdom of God” (Eph 3:10) in redemption, grace, and the Gospel!

I think there is a message about this in Genesis 11:6: “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” They were not YHWH-focused, so He couldn’t allow that to be. The body of Christ, however, is a different story. If AS ONE PEOPLE speaking the same language (the language of worship, of praise, of prayer, etc) we are to come together for Christ’s glory, I believe the Kingdom of God will explode with power! If that isn’t reason for racial reconcilliation, I don’t know what is. (Not to mention the fact that Jesus Himself prays for unity among believers, and in eternity we’ll all be together as one big praise team…)

PS. I am listening to the message by Brenda Salter McNeil from Urbana, and she’s speaking on GENESIS 11!!!!!! God is sooooooo cool! (sorry, I was excited to see the connection)

  4. I heard Brenda and her husband, Derek, talk about the relationship of Gen. 11 (Babel) and Pentecost. Pretty interesting to see how humans can unite for bad reasons and God sends out but unites in some pretty amazing ways at Pentecost.
